Santos cleared overdue salaries and image-rights payments on Saturday, one day after club president Marcelo Teixeira announced Neymar's father as the team's new chief executive, according to UOL. The payments totaled about R$ 37 million, the outlet reported.
The money covered two months of image rights owed to the professional squad and the CLT payroll that was due the following Monday. UOL described the funding as the new executive's first assignment: finding the resources to bring the club's wage obligations back up to date.
Why it matters
The timing puts the club's financial distress and its new leadership in the same frame. Santos has been behind on payments to its own players, and the appointment of Neymar's father — a businessman already tied to the club through his company NR Sports — was presented as a way to open new revenue streams rather than simply reshuffle the front office.
For a Brazilian club of Santos's stature, settling a payroll backlog within 24 hours of a leadership change signals both the scale of the problem and the reliance on outside money to solve it. UOL reports the funds came through an arrangement between NR Sports and Santos, backed by Teixeira. Both sides are treating the transaction as a business deal, and the club is expected to return the amount in some form.
A partner first, executive second
Neymar's father was not a newcomer to the club's finances before taking the CEO role. Through NR Sports he had already been injecting money into Santos during difficult stretches, according to UOL.
He helped the club resolve a FIFA transfer ban after buying seven advertising spaces on the team's uniforms. He also covered the cost of structural work at Vila Belmiro and the Rei Pelé training center, including renovations to the dressing room and press room, a new youth-academy building at the training ground, and a pitch replacement scheduled for this month.
In a video posted to social media at the time of the announcement, he said his initial focus would be creating new income for the club. He described his role as bringing opportunities to Santos that Teixeira could not secure on his own, and said his existing business network could supply things the club had not found in the market.
The debt that remains
The board's stated hope is that the new executive will draw sponsors capable of covering the club's obligations through the end of the season without adding to its debt, UOL reported.
That debt already includes a separate amount owed to NR Sports itself, tied to contractual rights over the forward Neymar since last year. UOL puts that figure above R$ 90 million.
Watch whether the sponsorship interest the club is counting on materializes before the season closes, and how Santos structures repayment of the roughly R$ 37 million it has just received.
